Artificial intelligence (AI) is the technology that makes machines capable of simulating the cognitive abilities of the human mind, making them exhibit problem-solving, learning and basic decision-making capabilities – something that is not usually expected from a machine. In other words, AI is the branch of technology that makes machines think like humans, which opens the door for unlimited possibilities. Here we have some of the experts from the field of AI talk about what this technology is capable of and how it’s all set to change the future.
1] AI of the future will have machines that will complete your sentences - Cade Metz
Cade Metz, New York Times Reporter covering AI, driverless cars, robotics and other emerging technology, mentions how any expert in the field of AI knows that completing sentences is something that is really tough for a machine (even though it’s cakewalk for us!). In one of his blogs, he talks about how we’ll soon have machines that can complete thoughts and finish sentences with uncanny accuracy.
Metz writes in his blog , “a team of Google researchers unveiled a system called Bert. Its improved technology answered questions just as well as humans did. Bert’s arrival punctuated a significant development in artificial intelligence. Over the last several months, researchers have shown that computer systems can learn the vagaries of language in general ways and then apply what they have learned to a variety of specific tasks.”
2] Deep Learning represents just a small blip in the history of humanity’s quest to replicate our own intelligence. - Karen Hao
Karen Hao, Senior AI Reporter - MIT Technology Review, explains how deep learning will soon be a thing of the past, even though currently it is the driving force behind AI. Deep learning works by finding patterns in data using statistics and has been immensely successful so far in mimicking the basic skills of human beings. These capabilities power the smartest technology that we have today.
However, deep learning might soon be replaced altogether, because even the smartest of technology has a certain “shelf life” if you can call it. Hao writes in her blog, “But though deep learning has singlehandedly thrust AI into the public eye, it represents just a small blip in the history of humanity’s quest to replicate our own intelligence. It’s been at the forefront of that effort for less than 10 years. When you zoom out on the whole history of the field, it’s easy to realize that it could soon be on its way out.” She also mentions how neural networks might be the next big thing in the world of AI.
3] There is enormous potential for machine learning to help with many important societal issues - Jeff Dean
Jeff Dean, Senior Fellow and SVP of Google Research and Health, insists on the possibilities of using AI for a social cause. He believes that AI has tremendous potential when it comes to helping mankind deal with major social issues that are a challenge for us today. Flood forecasting, wildlife conservation, biodiversity research, plant health and agriculture, are just a few areas where AI can make a difference.
Dean writes in his blog, “The goal of Google Research is to work on long-term, ambitious problems, with an emphasis on solving ones that will dramatically help people throughout their daily lives. In pursuit of that goal in 2019, we made advances in a broad set of fundamental research areas, applied our research to new and emerging areas such as healthcare and robotics, open sourced a wide variety of code and continued collaborations with Google product teams to build tools and services that are dramatically more helpful for our users.”
4] Covid-19 will accelerate the AI healthcare revolution –Kai-Fu Lee
Kai-Fu Lee, Taiwanese-born American computer scientist, businessman and writer and an AI expert, strongly believes in the potential of AI in revolutionizing healthcare of the future. He insists on how the Covid-19 pandemic and the resulting pressures on the healthcare infrastructure across the globe, has created the need for a smarter approach and this is where AI will help.
Lee writes in his blog , “As the pandemic has rolled around the planet, innovative applications of AI have cropped up in many different locations. The many instances of AI in action against Covid-19 provide a glimpse of what will be possible in the various aspects of health care in the future. We have a long way to go.”
5] There's no reason your Tesla won't be able to fly in the future- Elon Musk
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX and an expert on the potential of robotics and AI, is known for many of his mind-blowing tweets about the possibilities of AI and what the future holds. Some of his tweets on AI have created controversy, but there’s no stopping him.
He has several tweets to his credit where he talks about the future of AI. Here’s one of them, where he talks about the possibility of having a Tesla that flies, "Not saying the next gen Roadster special upgrade package *will* definitely enable it to fly short hops, but maybe … Certainly possible. Just a question of safety. Rocket tech applied to a car opens up revolutionary possibilities.”
So, we see that the future of AI has many things in store for us. AI is easily one of the domains that has the most extensive research going on about it, and going by what the experts have to say, there’s lot to come.
